At the forefront of industry innovation since 1909

Founded in 1909, the Vollmer Group has established itself as a global leader in advanced grinding, erosion and processing machinery, primarily aimed at the wood and metal industries. The company has a reputation for its constant pursuit of quality, precision and innovation. Her clients include, among others: tool sharpening services, sawmills and tool manufacturers. With over 800 employees worldwide, approximately 550 of them at its headquarters in Biberach (Germany), Vollmer places a strong emphasis on research and development, constantly striving to maintain a leading position in advanced technologies.

In one of the branches, Vollmer of America, the implementation of 3D printing technology turned out to be groundbreaking. Rotary tool application engineers Derrick Bailey and Carlos Becerra have led this transformation, driven by the need for rapid prototyping and custom tooling.

“We needed quick, cost-effective solutions to solve the challenges our service engineers faced, such as removing covers from mixing valves and protecting expensive wheels on smart cabinets from damage,” explains Derrick. Traditional methods, while effective, were too slow or too expensive, which led Vollmer to explore the possibilities offered by 3D printing.

BCN3D Epsilon: The key to success

The introduction of BCN3D Epsilon printers has brought a lot to Vollmer benefits. “The ability to produce prototypes and fixtures revolutionized our workflow almost immediately,” says Carlos. The key factors in choosing these 3D printers were their double extrusion function, fully enclosed design and humidity control, which ensures that each print meets the high standards of precision and reliability for which Vollmer is renowned.

Accelerating innovation and flexibility with 3D printing

Rapid iteration and refinement of prototypes significantly accelerated the company's innovation processes, allowing it to respond more quickly to customer needs. “3D printing has fundamentally changed our approach to problem solving,” adds Derrick. “We can now turn our ideas into reality in days, not weeks. I would definitely recommend BCN3Dprinters to any company looking to improve their production capabilities and optimize processes.”

3D printing also allowed Vollmer to quickly solve various operational challenges. For example, when standard tooling did not meet expectations, the team immediately designed and printed custom tooling, significantly reducing costs and time compared to traditional outsourcing. This flexibility has also extended to creating protective solutions for sensitive components, such as custom wheel mounts in smart cabinets that prevent damage and allow easy access.

Exploring new materials and the future of 3D printing

In addition to prototyping and custom tools, Vollmer is also exploring the potential of advanced tools materials and accessories, takich jak Hotend X and PAHT CF15, in their 3D printing processes. Although these materials are still in the testing phase, they offer promising results in terms of strength and resistance to high temperatures, making them suitable for more demanding applications. “We are just starting to realize the possibilities of these materials, but we already see the potential for even more durable and long-lasting parts,” adds Derrick.

Through the strategic implementation of 3D printingtechnology, Vollmer of America continues its tradition of excellence while adopting new technologies that drive efficiency and innovation on a global scale.
