Can a 3D scanner be useful in museology? - see the statement made by our specialist as part of the "Tips 3D" series together with the 3don.pl portal.

Museology is one of the fields of science in which the use of the latest achievements of 3D technology is slowly becoming commonplace.

The trends of recent years indicate the constant increase in popularity of the use of the 3D scanner in museology and the broadly understood protection of cultural goods and preservation of national heritage.

The Act on the Protection of Goods and Culture imposes an obligation to catalog, record and document all monuments located in the country. The exhibits are extensively described in registers and records. The grandeur, and thus the vastness of the existing paper collections, begs for innovation. Digitization in museology is one of the fronts where 3D scanning is used.

3D scanning is a technology that is slowly blooming in museums. What can it be useful for? The introduction of this innovation in the creation of the aforementioned documentation of objects - maintaining a 1: 1 scale without the need to create technical and demonstrative drawings, seems almost inevitable. Creating non-invasive documentation - color, with faithful reproduction of the polychrome of the scanned object, building a digital library / archive of exhibits - will enable the presentation of copies previously stored in warehouses. It is also impossible not to mention the detailed documentation of the conservation processes and archaeological sites that allow for a better understanding of the work in a technological, artistic and historical sense. These are just a few of the suggestions that can be cited and the number of which is constantly growing.

Everything indicates that following innovative solutions, most museums will soon have such devices or will use the services of companies dealing in 3D scanning.
